What is a fully reversible window?

A fully reversible window is one whose sash rotates on a horizontal axis until the outside face is turned indoors. That is what lets you clean the outer pane while standing in the room, which is why it is specified so often in flats and on upper floors. Top swing window and easy clean window describe the same product. Ours come in 35 layouts, from a single pane upwards.

How do you clean a reversible window?

You clean a reversible window from inside the room. Release the handle, swing the sash out, then keep turning until the outer face is pointing at you. Both sides are then within reach from where you stand, so there is no ladder, no cradle and no window cleaner to book. On a fourth-floor flat that is the entire reason the window type exists.

What is the difference between a reversible window and a tilt and turn window?

The difference between a reversible window and a tilt and turn window is where the sash ends up. A tilt and turn swings inward on a side hinge, so it needs clear floor space and it meets curtains, blinds and anything on the sill. A reversible sash rotates within the axis of its own hinges, so it stays in the frame opening: nothing swings into the room, and nothing projects across a walkway or balcony outside. Both let you clean from inside.

Is a reversible window a type of casement window?

A fully reversible window is a casement window, in the sense that it is a single sash hung in a frame rather than a sliding sash. What differs is the hinge. An ordinary casement is hinged on one edge and swings like a door. A reversible sash pivots on hinges set into the sides of the frame, which is what allows it to rotate right round. You will see it sold as a fully reversible casement window for that reason.

Are reversible windows safe with children in the house?

Reversible windows can be made safe for children, but you have to specify it when you order. An espagnolette handle with a child safety lock restricts how far the sash opens, so you keep background ventilation while the opening stays too small to climb through. A key-locking handle is available as well, in satin or white. Both are options rather than defaults, so choose them in the configurator.

Can I get reversible windows in timber rather than uPVC?

Yes, and timber is all we make. Our reversible windows come in Scandinavian pine or alu-clad pine, made to measure, with a 10 year warranty on pine and 12 years on alu-clad. You choose from 12 RAL colours, nine glazes or clear lacquer, inside and outside separately. Most reversible windows sold in the UK are uPVC, so a timber one is comparatively hard to find.

Is alu-clad the same as an aluminium window?

Alu-clad is not the same as aluminium. An aluminium window is aluminium all the way through, frame and sash. An alu-clad window is a timber window with a 1 mm aluminium skin on the outside face only: the frame you see and touch indoors is pine, and the weather side is aluminium. You get timber's insulating behaviour and warmth inside, without repainting the outside.

How to maintain your energy-efficient windows and doors

Pine windows and doors

When to check the pine windows and doors?
When it comes to pine windows and doors, it's a good idea to be proactive with maintenance.
Check the surface regularly, especially on the sides of the house that are exposed to sunlight, as the sun's rays are particularly hard on the paint.
When to paint the pine windows and doors?
The humidity in the wood should not be too high. In addition, it is best when the temperature is between 10-20 degrees and you are not painting in direct sunlight. Don't start painting before the dew has disappeared and don't start so late that the dew returns before the paint is completely dry.
Weather-wise, late summer is often a good time to paint.
How to paint pine windows and doors?
It's best to paint before the paint starts to crack or peel, as all you need to do is clean. before painting on top. Once the paint has started to crack, we recommend sanding and priming before repainting.
It is recommended to give the woodwork two thin coats of paint rather than one thick coat. Let the paint dry for 24 hours between coats, remembering not to close the windows until the paint is dry.
A good tip is to take off the window frames and remove as many fittings as possible to speed up the painting process and make it possible to paint underneath the fittings.
It is important that you do not paint sealing strips, fittings and warranty and production labelling.

Alu-clad windows and doors

How to maintain alu-clad windows and doors?
When it comes to alu-clad windows and doors, maintenance is minimal.
Simply wash the frame and sash a couple of times a year as needed. Use pH neutral soap and lukewarm water.

How does a reversible window work?

The sash pivots on a hinge set into the sides of the frame rather than hanging from one edge. Release the handle and the sash swings outward; keep turning and it rotates until what was the outside face is now facing into the room.

That is the whole idea. The outer pane comes to you, so cleaning an upper-floor window needs no ladder, no cradle and no contractor.

Two practical consequences follow. The sash rotates within the axis of its hinges, so it does not swing into the room as it opens. And at the intermediate position it gives you a large ventilation opening without the sash standing out across a walkway or a balcony.

Reversible windows

At SparWindows you’ll find an extensive range of reversible windows, also called top swing windows. A top swing window is particularly useful in upper floor apartments, with easy access to the outside of the window.

Our fully reversible windows are available in a variety of different models and combinations – you can, for example, choose whether or not to have glazing bars added and we can produce top swing windows with up to 9 panes of glass and in dimensions of up to 150x150 cm.

If you wish to calculate the price of a particular top swing window; simply click on the preferred model, type your dimensions and choose between quality Scandinavian pine or alu clad timber. Your price will instantly appear online. If you wish to purchase multiple reversible windows in different sizes, please add each window to your cart separately – you can always see the total price in the basket.

Reversible or tilt and turn?

Both let you clean and ventilate from inside. They take up space in opposite ways.

A tilt and turn window tilts inward at the top for ventilation, and swings fully inward on a side hinge when you want to clean it. That inward swing needs clear floor space, and it will meet curtains, blinds and anything on the sill.
A reversible window rotates within its own frame. Nothing swings into the room, so the sill stays usable and the curtains stay where they are. Outside, the sash does not project across a walkway or over a balcony either.
Choose reversible in a small room, in a flat where the window is above a walkway, balcony, conservatory roof or extension, or anywhere a full inward swing is not practical.
Choose tilt and turn where you want a window that also functions as an escape route, or where floor space is not the constraint.

We make both. Our tilt & turn windows sit on a different platform, with a wider material range including uPVC.

Our fully reversible windows can be combined with other elements – see, for example, our extensive range of fixed top guided windows, patio doors or top guided windows, which are often used as bathroom windows.

If you need an overview of all our windows and prices, you can quickly and easily check all models and see our special offers on new windows.

When purchasing reversible windows from SparWindows, you will recieve a full up to 12-year warranty and CE marked products. SparWindows is part of the Inwido group – your guarantee of purchasing windows from a supplier with solid finances. This ensures that you can be certain that we will continue to do business throughout the term of the warranty.

Child safety and locking

A window that opens fully in an upstairs flat raises an obvious question, and there are two answers in the configurator.

A child safety lock on the espagnolette handle restricts how far the sash opens. You keep background ventilation and the opening stays too small to climb through. It is the option to specify in any bedroom or any room above ground level where children spend time.
A key-locking handle is available in satin or white. It locks the sash shut and takes the handle out of the equation altogether, which matters on ground-floor and accessible windows.

Both are options rather than defaults, so choose them while you configure. They are considerably harder to add afterwards.

Where reversible windows are used

Anywhere the outside of the glass is hard to reach, and anywhere a sash must not swing.

Upper floors and flats, which is the classic case. Cleaning the outer pane from inside removes the whole problem of access.
Above a walkway, a balcony or a shared access deck.** An outward-opening sash across a walkway is a hazard and often not permitted. A reversible sash rotates rather than projecting.
Above a conservatory roof, a bay or a single-storey extension.** An outward-opening window would meet the roof below. A reversible one does not.
Small rooms, where an inward-swinging sash would take the floor or the sill.
Blocks and rented property, where the same window has to be maintained across many units by one owner. Cleaning from inside is what makes that affordable.

What size can a reversible window be?

Frame size is the window itself, measured from the outside of the frame on one side to the outside on the other. The opening size is the hole in the wall, and you subtract 2 to 3 cm from it in both width and height to get the frame size. That gap is what you seal once the window is in.

A reversible sash has an upper size limit that a fixed pane does not, because the whole sash has to rotate and its hardware has to carry it. Where an opening is wider than one sash allows, the answer is a combination: a reversible sash next to a fixed pane in the same frame, same profile and same colour. Eleven of the layouts on this page are built that way.
