The picture-frame effect
Patio doors typically feature the largest glazed area of any door type, often extending from floor level to near ceiling height. When this large glass surface is framed in black, it creates what architects often describe as a picture-frame effect. The dark outline defines the view beyond and turns the garden or terrace into a deliberate visual feature of the room.
In British homes, where the garden is often one of the property’s most valued qualities, this framing effect significantly influences how the interior space feels. The view becomes more focused, more composed and more architectural.
The effect is particularly striking in open-plan spaces, kitchen extensions and garden-facing living rooms, where black patio doors visually connect inside and outside while still maintaining a clear boundary between the two.
